 "The best" 2010-03-21

AFter living in Italy for many years, I know that ILLY coffee is the best "cafe" coffee and I need to be on decaf only, so this hits the spot.

 "Not premium decaf espresso" 2010-02-02
By Dr. Gary Seeman (San Francisco, CA USA)
I've recently bought a Saeco Magic Plus Cappucino machine, which allows me to brew espresso from ground fresh beans or the standardized Illy Easy Serving Espresso pods, for which it offers its own standardized settings. I just tried these decaf pods for the first time. For the last two weekends, I've been experimenting with the much messier process of grinding my own coffee and adjusting the dose, how intensely I tamp the coffee grounds into the portafilter (the holder), etc. I have access to gourmet quality decaf beans from Blue Bottle in San Francisco. What a difference the hand process makes!

I gave these pods three stars because they eliminate a lot of the mess of grinding, dosing and tamping my own espresso. But when I do it myself, I get a somewhat sweet, non-acidic and intense coffee flavor with 1/4 inch of rich crema (foam) on the surface, although the foam in my machine is a built-in feature of the different portafilter used for grinds. When I use an Illy pod, I get an average, slightly bitter and weak espresso shot with almost no crema. The crema itself may or not improve the flavor. See the footnote below for more about that arcane issue.* The pod holder in my machine also only lets me load a single pod, so I can't get a double shot. The bottom line is if you do more by hand you can get more flavor!

I'm new at this so researched espresso making online at one of those sites for home espresso hobbyists. They all say that the espresso machine is the accessory for the grinder, which makes more of a difference. So I moved from a cheap blade grinder that chops the beans into many different sizes and can clog the espresso machine with fine dust if you're not careful to a quality conical burr grinder. The latter creates grounds small enough for espresso and of sufficiently similar size to allow consistent exposure for the right time (about 25 seconds), at the right pressure (8 to 9 1/2 atmospheric pressures or "bars"), and without channeling, where the hot water finds a path of least resistance, with little brewing, into your cup. People experiment with these variables to get a good result for the beans and machine they're using. The least expensive quality burr grinders are ones like the Lelit PL53, Lelit PL043 or Rancilio Rocky. I got my Lelit PL53 refurbished for just under $200. I'm not yet sure whether I can get maximum flavor from the Saeco machine, but it is much better without the pods.

So if you want quick, mediocre espresso with little mess, these pods will do the trick but at such a hefty cost a quality grinder would soon pay for itself.

* Even professional baristas debate the merits of crema, yet they all agree it's one of the hallmarks of freshly brewed espresso done well -- although this is such an artform that you can also make a lousy cup with lots of foam. And they're typically using portafilters that don't regulate the flow. Instead they adjust bean selection, grind, dose and tamping themselves for more control. To make this "crema" issue more confusing with my machine, it only comes with a so-called "pressurized" portafilter that regulates the flow and creates foam whether or not the coffee grinds are fresh. Some purists replace this with a non-pressurized and/or bottomless portafilter at a hefty $50 plus, but I'm getting pretty tasty espresso without doing that, as I find that dose, adjustments in the grind and intensity of tamping do make a difference even with my portafilter as-is. The filter paper in the pods may eliminate the crema even if the sealed grounds are relatively fresh. The actual difference in taste and mouth feel are the issues for me.

 "THE BEST" 2008-02-09
By E. Wilkins (Bemidji MN)
seriously the best pods I've ever tried. I use two for a double shot each day which means I run through a tin quite quickly and it IS expensive. Wish I had a fortune so I could use these all the time but from now on will have to use them sparingly. Excellent taste which is hard to find in any decaf coffee.

oh and I have the DeLonghi EC155 Espresso Maker and they fit perfectly in this machine. I DO get a great crema if you preheat the machine for at least 5 minutes or so. I also found that trimming the extra filter around the edge of the pod helps to get that good seal you need.

 "Easy Does It" 2007-10-01

I never realized how easy pods are to use with an espresso machine (it's my first time!). Illy packs the espresso well so I don't have any flavor issues and its easy to clean after a brew. Easy Does It...what else can I say.
